Orangeburg, S.C.—The Columbia College softball team (1-1, 0-0 AAC) split a non-conference doubleheader Friday afternoon with Clafin University (5-5) at the Adden Street Field. The Koalas lost game one 10-2 but came back in game two for the win 12-3. The first non-JV game of the season marks the Columbia College record 0-0, 1.
In game one, Columbia College's Madison Ryan (JR/Good Creek, SC) scored the first run on a thrown ball as captain Kelsey Fulton (JR/Andrews, SC) advanced to second. The Koalas held tight matching runs in the first innings as Taylor Rawl (JR/Lugoff, SC) scored in the second off a wild pitch. Clafin took 4 in the third and continued to hold on until the end finishing the first game 10-2.
Columbia College took a two run lead as Morgan Smith (JR/Greenville, SC) and Rebecca Prosser (JR/Myrtle Beach, SC) came home to lead by the bottom of the first inning before being held in the second inning as the Panthers scored a single run in the second.
An additional two runs by M. Smith and Prosser in the third and runs by Michenous Marselia (SR/Willemsted, Curacau) and Fulton put up two more in the fourth. Columbia only allowed Clafin two runs between the innings leading the score 6-3.
Hanks scored one run in the fifth and additional runs scored by Naja Hough (FR/Columbia, SC), Prosser, Maggie Leatherman (JR/Batesburg, SC), and Marselia in the sixth finished the game with a 9 run victory.
Pitcher M. Smith took the win in the second game allowing 4 hits and facing 23 batters with 6 forced outs.
Columbia College was led by Prosser in game two with two hits, three runs and one RBI.
Columbia softball will play again on Saturday, Feb. 19th against the Coker College Cobras in a non-conference doubleheader.
