Koalas Lacrosse drops 17-7 to Cobras

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Columbia College (1-2, 0-0 AAC) lacrosse team fell 17-7 to the Coker College Cobras (1-1, 0-1 NCAA-SAC) Thursday night in their third game of the season.

A goal 56 seconds into the game by Coker opened play to start a constant battle up and down the field as fast breaks dominated the first half. A quick reply by Tiffany Tortorello (JR/Pine Bush, NY) assisted by Kendra Blackstock (SR/Charleston, SC) brought the game back 1-1. The Cobras answered with two more goals before a free position shot by Sunema Mauga (FR/ Pago Pago, American Samoa) was able to put another goal in the net for the Koalas bringing the score to 2-3. Coker scored 6 goals back to back before Blackstock was able to capitalize on quick movement within the arc to put two more up on the scoreboard before the half leaving the score 4-9.

Early in the second half the Cobras came back hard posting 5 goals within the first 6 minutes of the half to dominate the scoreboard 14-4 to run the clock. The Koalas wouldn't quit as they pressured powerfully in the midfield and took charge of groundballs. Blackstock netted a 5th goal from a free position for the Koalas with 12 minutes left in the second half. Tortorello answered again for the Koalas with goal at the 10:04 mark but Coker came back 13 seconds later to bring the score back to a 6-15 lead. Two saves in a row by goalie Diamond Brown (FR/Queens, NY) kept the koalas in play including a free position save and successful clear. The Cobras netted two more in the last two minutes before Walter finished the game with a final goal with 7 seconds to end the game 7-17.

Freshman Goalie Diamond Brown performed well under the lights with several sweeping saves to post 11 saves and 16 goals allowed for a save percentage of 40%.

Senior Kendra Blackstock lead in goals scored and assists with 3 goals, 1 assist and 3 groundballs.

Junior Tiffany Tortorello came second in goals with 2 on the board and 2 groundballs for 100% shooting percentage for the night.

Columbia plays again this Saturday, February 18th at 1pm against AAC opponent Asbury at 1pm at Younts Stadium.
