COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 9 Columbia College (6-4, 4-1 AAC) defeated Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent Reinhardt University, 6-5 ,Saturday afternoon in a previously postponed match. The game was dedicated to the Wounded Warrior Project and honored all current and former US military personnel.
The Lady Eagles (5-5, 4-1 AAC) opened the scoring one minute into the first half before Aaleeyah Brimmer (JR/Charleston, SC) scored an equalizer seven minutes later. Resistance on both sides kept the score 1-1 until a goal from Reinhardt gave the Lady Eagles the edge.
However, Reinhardt's lead dropped again as Tiffany Tortorello (JR/ Pine Bush, NY) found the back of the net with an assist from Kendra Blackstock (SR/Mount Pleasant, SC). Another unassisted goal from Brimmer and a goal from Morgan Solesbee (SO/ Welford, SC) put the score at 4-2 at the end of the first half.
Two goals early in the second half from the Lady Eagles tied the game 4-4 with another twenty-four minutes in the half. Three fouls from the Koalas awarded the Eagles a chance to take the lead as they scored off the third free position shot given.
A free position shot on the other end of the field from Tortorello tied the game yet again. The Koalas refused to go into overtime and a goal from senior Devon Walter (SR/ Columbia, SC) assisted by Brimmer gave the Koalas the point they needed to take the win 6-5.
Brimmer and Tortorello tied for leading goals with two each. Brimmer marked up a total of four shots on goal, one ground ball, and one assist while both of her goals were unassisted. Tortorello put three shots on goal, four ground balls, and took two free position shots including the final balancing goal.
Freshman goalie Diamond Brown (FR/Queens, NY) took the win with nine goals and 5 goals against giving her a save percentage of 64% for the afternoon.
The Koalas play again Tuesday, March 28th at home against Oglethorpe University.
