Cross Country Season Starts with a Win

On a hot and muggy day, the women of Columbia College Cross Country team came out with a purpose. They ran strong and in packs on a 2 loop flat course at Columbia Internaional University.

Janay Chisholm led the way with a respectable 21:31 in the women's 5k race. That was good enough for a 2nd place finish. Alyssa Waibel was 4th overall and the 1st overall first year student in the race. She finished in 21:52. QuEssence Gillison, Irene Requena, and Annika Wicht finished 7th, 8th, and 11th respectively. Helen Taylor gave us a strong finish with a blistering kick to overtake 21st place in a time of 25:18.

Minyonta Mavins pulled out around mile one with an irritated knee issue and Lauren Glencross was out due to an illness.  Columbia was able to win big over opponents such as CIU, USCB, Bob Jones, and St Andrews. The Koalas ran away with an impressive 31 point victory to open the season!

Coach Nichols says he is very proud of these young women who raced hard today. They are looking forward to racing at Winthrop in 2 weeks.
