Newberry Outlasts Columbia Tennis

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Columbia College tennis team lost a close match to Newberry College 5-4.   Freshmenn Danielle Cupid, Keneisha Whittington, and sophomore Abbagayle Stevenson won in singles.  It was the first singles win for Cupid, who was added to Columbia's roster this spring.

The fighting Koalas were missing a key member on the road trip, which gave sophomore Candace Mathews an opportunity to step into the starting lineup.   Mathews and Stevenson scored the only doubles victory 8-5.  Matthews also lost a tough fought singles battle 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.  The crux of the match was the close doubles matches that Newberry was able to hold on to.  Newberry's top two doubles teams were both able to hold on the 8-6 wins.

Columbia will next host Berry College on Saturday at 11:00 am for Family Day.
