Men's Golf Shoots Terrific Round on Day 2 to Place 6th at Bluefield; Freshman Finishes 3rd
BLUEFIELD, Va. - The Columbia College men's golf team opened their season this week by shooting the second-best round of day two (293) to rise from 9th to 6th in the team standings in the 12-team Fincastle Intercollegiate at Bluefield University. It was held at Fincastle CC in the Blue Ridge Mountains on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
The Koalas were led by a third place overall finish from freshman Parker Gordish who shot rounds of 3-over 73 on Monday and even-par 70 on Tuesday to finish at 3-over 143 and make the All-Tournament team. The Koalas finished 6th as a team over the two-day event and were the 2nd-best team on day two shooting a 13-over 293 compared to their day one total of 312 as they finished at +45 for the tournament. Bluefield (+19) won the meet followed by Milligan (+35), SMC (+37), Bluefield State (+39) and Johnson (+42) in the top five. Columbia was only three strokes from 5th and just 10 shots from 2nd overall.
Sophomore Josh Brown then finished in a tie for 12th at +9 over 149 after shooting rounds of 77 Monday and 2-over 72 on Tuesday. Fellow sophomore Jaxon Mock then came in a tie for 27th at +14 as he improved by 8 shots in round two going from an 81 to a 73 for a 154. His twin brother, Zach Mock then placed 40th at +19 with rounds of 81 and 78 for a 159 score. All four Koala team scorers improved their scores by multiple strokes on day two.
Also competing were sophomore Christian Hadley and freshman Brandon Russ. Russ finished 54th at 26-over 166 with rounds of 79 and 87 while Hadley posted rounds of 89 and 78 to place 56th at +27 with his 11-stroke improvement on day two.
The golf team is next competing on Sept. 22-23 in Johnson City, TN at the East Tennessee Collegiate.
