Men's Lacrosse Knocks off Warren Wilson for Second Win

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College men's lacrosse team picked up their second win of the season on Wednesday evening defeating Div. III foe Warren Wilson College (N.C.) 17-12 from Younts Stadium.

 CC led 5-2 after the first quarter and 8-4 at halftime. CC then scored 4 more goals in the third to lead 12-7 while each team then scored five goals apiece in the 4th. The Koalas got out to a 3-0 lead after the first six minutes on goals from freshmen midfielders William Tanks, Noah Norwood and Gavin Gordon before Peyton Brand and Tanner Kuykendall scored to end the quarter with CC leading 5-2. Gordon assisted on three of the goals in the quarter.

In the second, Columbia scored three straight goals in the middle of the period as Gordon scored twice and Norwood once more. Tanks then opened the third quarter with an unassisted goal before WWC crawled to within three at 9-6. Kuykendall then made it 10-6 while freshman attacker Landon Flenniken and Norwood traded goals and assists to put CC up 12-7 at the end of three quarters. 

The Owls of WWC then made a rally in the fourth scoring three straight goals to get within two at 12-10 before Norwood and Kuykendall scored to make it 14-10 with five minutes to play. Flenniken then added two more goals over the next three-plus minutes while Norwood scored the final goal for the 5-point win.

Norwood finished with five goals and an assist on 23 shots while Kuykendall, Flenniken, and Gordon each added three goals apiece with Gordon recording three assists for a 6-point game. 

Defensively, Kuykendall led the team with 3 caused turnovers and a ground ball as part of his 5-point day while faceoff specialist Kai Correia led the team with 11 ground balls and winning 17 face offs. Grad. senior Fin Landi then made 10 saves on 22 shots on goal for the win. Columbia outshot the Owls by a staggering 61-29 count as well including 21-5 in the third and 17-9 in the fourth.

Columbia improves to 2-9 overall and will next remain home to host Point University (Ga.) on Wednesday, April 8 at 12:30 pm.
