Koalas Fall at Home to Cumberlands in Season Finale
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College men's lacrosse team finished up their inaugural season on Saturday falling to 7th ranked University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 24-4 from Younts Stadium.
Scoring the first goal of the game for CC was junior defender Jake Wight, who scored his first career goal in the opening quarter while also recording four ground balls and a caused turnover. Freshman attacker Noah Norwood led with 2 goals and 8 shots in the game along with a ground ball as his goal to open the second quarter got CC to within six goals at 9-3. Unfortunately, CC could get no closer as UC took a 16-3 lead at the break.
Sophomore captain Peyton Brand recorded a goal in the 4th quarter and picked up four ground balls while causing three UC turnovers. Freshman attacker Landon Flenniken also added two assists and 3 ground balls while sophomore midfielder Rione Konz also added an assist and 3 ground balls.
Freshman goalie Joey Stubenvoll made 8 saves on 16 shots on goal in 30 minutes of second half action in relief of starting goalie, sophomore Joshua Nguyen, who recorded 11 saves on 27 shots on goal. The Koalas also won 10 of 28 faceoffs led by freshman midfielder William Tanks winning five. Tanks added 3 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers as well.
The Koalas, led by head coach Tom Kinney, finished their inaugural season 2-13 overall and 0-9 in the AAC while UC improved to 8-6 on the season and 5-4 in the conference. Norwood also finished the season leading the team in goals with 31 and points with 34 while freshman attacker Gavin Gordon led with nine assists and totaled 24 points.
