COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at home Saturday evening to rival Milligan University (TN) after a two hour rain delay.
An own goal from defender Matse Zeilfelder heped the Buffaloes score the game-winning goal in the 85th minute of action as he attempted to clear the ball defensively but accidentally hit it into his own net.
The Koalas got on the board first scoring in the 17th minute on a goal from freshman forward Matthias Dennis. It was his second goal of the season. MU controlled the possession and shot count in the first half taking a 9-3 edge in shots but trailed on the scoreboard to the Koalas.
CC then carried their lead through 63 minutes before MU scored off a corner kick to knot the match at 1 apiece. After 20 more minutes of scoreless play, the own goal by the Koalas off another MU corner kick and attempted clear gave the win to Milligan.
Senior keeper Mathias Gravesen was the standout making 10 saves on 11 shots on goal.
Columbia falls to 2-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference while MU improves to 5-2-1 and 4-1 in the AAC. The Koalas will remain home to host non-conference foe Carolina Christian on Wednesday night at 7 pm.
