Koalas Walk-Off WV Tech 2-1 at Cola Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College softball team opened their home Cola Classic Tournament with a 2-1 walk-off win over WV Tech on Friday morning in game one of the two-day tournament.

Freshman 2B Maggie Hinz topped her 4-hit day with the game winning two-out RBI single in the 7th. Sophomore OF Brooke Farrell walked with 2 outs and then came around to score the tying run on junior SS Sophia Caley's RBI double. Then, after sophomore CF Ashlynn Wolff reached via walk, Caley advanced to third on a wild pitch before coming around to score on Hinz' hit.

Junior pitcher Ally Boyd got the win as she threw all 7 innings allowing one run on 5 hits with 2 walks to improve to 2-0 and lower her ERA to 1.68.

Wolff and Caley also recorded multi-hit games as Wolff went 2 for 4 with a stolen base while Caley had three hits and the lone extra-base hit.

Columbia improved to 2-3 overall after the win and next hosted Coastal Georgia College at later Friday but fell 8-0 in five innings.

Catcher Reagan Kelly led with a hit for the Koalas while CCGA used three homers on the afternoon scoring 2 runs apiece in the 2nd and 5th innings and four in the third. Junior Pitcher Addison Warner got the loss throwing just 2 innings allowing 4 runs on 6 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Junior reliever Kynsly Gehling then came on and finished the game throwing 2 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and a K.

The Koalas will next host Rio Grande (OH) and Point University (AL) on Saturday afternoon on Day 2 of the Cola Classic. Games are at 3 and 5 pm. SMC will first play the same two schools at 10 am and 12 pm from Columbia's field.
