Koala Softball Splits one-run Games with Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College softball team split their doubleheader with crosstown rival Benedict College in a battle of thrilling one-run games. BC came back to steal game one 7-6 before the Koalas edged the Tigers 3-2 in game two under the lights.

GAME 2: CC 3, BC 2

Columbia was led by pitcher Ally Boyd as she came on in relief of starter Madison Cheek in the 5th inning to shut down the Tigers over the final 2 and 1/3 innings to close out the game. She also drove in the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run in the 5th inning on an RBI single that brought home junior SS Ashlynn Wolff. Boyd allowed zero runs on 2 hits with a strikeout while Cheek allowed 2 runs on 5 hits walking three and striking out one.

Wolff got the Koalas out to a 1-0 lead with her RBI double in the third while Cheek's RBI single in the 4th inning staked CC to a 2-0 lead that scored freshman catcher Reagan Kelly. Benedict then rallied with two runs in the 5th scoring on an error and a wild pitch before Boyd shut them down. Wolff led the offense with two hits while Boyd, Cheek, and CF Lana Hampson also recorded singles.

GAME 1: BC 7, CC 6

Game one was an odd one as Columbia got out to a quick 6-0 lead scoring all their runs in the 2nd inning as they looked to run-rule the Tigers. However, BC finally settled down and trimmed CC's lead down to three at 6-3 through 5 and 1/2 innings before hitting a grand slam home run to give the Tigers the 7-6 lead in the 6th. Columbia, unfortunately, could not re-discover their offense and dropped the tough game one.

Junior starting pitcher Addison Warner threw 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 7 runs on 8 hits while walking five and striking out five. Cheek then came on in relief and threw 1 and 1/3 shutout innings.

In the second inning, the Koalas received RBI singles from Hampson and 3B Elaina Seymour along with an RBI double from freshman 2B Maggie Hinz and a two-run double from Wolff. Kelly recorded the lone two-hit game as well.

Columbia goes to 4-6 on the season while BC sits at 3-3. The Lady Koalas get right back to action on Wednesday when they host Paine College at 4 and 6 pm.
