Koala Softball Sweeps Bluefield
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College softball team begun AAC play with a two-game sweep of visiting Bluefield University (VA) on Friday afternoon winning 9-1 in six innings in game one and 3-1 in game two in the evening.
GM1: CC 9, BU 1
Senior starting pitcher Addison Warner pitched another 6 solid innings to get the win allowing just one run on 2 hits with a walk while striking out seven to improve to 3-3. A scoreless game exploded in the 4th inning as freshman RF Madison Cheek drilled a three-run bases-loaded double to plate CC to a 3-0 lead. Sophomore SS/OF Ashlynn Wolff's RBI single followed before junior OF Lana Hampson came around to score on a Ram throwing error to put Columbia up 5-0.
After BU got one back in the 5th, the Koalas put an end to the game in the 6th with a 4-run inning starting with an Aliyah Crawley RBI single, as she reached base safely in all four ABs. Junior SS Sophia Caley then made it 8-1 with her two-run double before Crawley, a senior 1B, came around to score on a wild pitch one batter later to clinch the 8-run win. Wolff led with two hits while freshman 2B Maggie Hinz and Crawley combined to walk 5 times with Crawley scoring two runs and stealing a base.
GM2: CC 3, BU 1
In game two, the Lady Koalas were led entirely by junior pitcher Ally Boyd as she recorded three hits including the game-winning two-run homer while driving in all three runs and pitching 7 innings of one-run ball. Boyd threw all 7 frames allowing just the one run on 8 hits while walking three to improve to 4-2.
After Bluefield got out to a 1-0 lead in the 4th, Boyd and the Koalas tied it up in the bottom half on her RBI double that scored Hinz from first base, as she had reached via single. Then, in the 6th inning, Boyd untied the game with her monster two-run homer to left field that also brought home Crawley, who had singled. Cheek also recorded another hit in the win while Boyd finished a triple shy of the cycle and is now hitting .364 with 3 homers and 14 RBIs.
Columbia improves to 7-7 on the season and 2-0 in the conference while BU fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Koalas are right back in action on Saturday when they host Tennessee Wesleyan in a 1pm doubleheader.
