Koala Softball Sweeps KCU on the Road
GRAYSON, KY - The Columbia College softball team went on the road to Kentucky on Tuesday afternoon and picked up two wins as they swept Kentucky Christian University rallying to win 3-2 in game one and 4-2 in 9 innings in game two.
The Koalas have now played two extra inning games over their past three contests and have won six of their past nine games and four of their past six. CC is now 9-9 on the season and 4-2 in the conference.
GAME 1: CC 3, KCU 2
Senior starting pitcher Addison Warner (4-4) picked up the win, her fourth, for the Koalas in game one throwing all 7 innings allowing just two runs on 4 hits while walking two and striking out five. KCU (6-4) scored a quick two runs in the first inning off four hits off Warner before she turned around to shut down the Lady Knights over the final six innings. She was so dominant after the first inning that she no-hit the Knights over the final six frames to allow her offense to come through.
The Koala offense got a run on the board in the 5th inning as freshman catcher Reagan Kelly scored off a KCU error before CC added two more runs in the 6th to take a 3-2 lead. Freshman outfielder Madison Cheek and pinch runner Hailie Lebiedz each scored in the 6th on a wild pitch and another Knight error. Lebiedz pinch ran for Ally Boyd, who had singled, and went on to steal third base before scoring on the wild pitch. Cheek then walked to reach base and came around to score on Kelly's batted ball. Boyd led the offense with two hits while outfielder Ashlynn Wolff singled and stole a base. Cheek and 2B Maggie Hinz also recorded hits.
GAME 2: CC 4, KCU 2 (9 INNINGS)
Game two was another marathon for the Koalas but they outlasted the Knights in 9 innings with a two-run single from Ashlynn Wolff in the top of the ninth that clinched the win for Columbia. The pivotal ninth began with a Kelly single before a Cheek walk put two on with no outs. a sac bunt from Taylor Perry then advanced the runners to 2nd and third before Wolff's single drove them in.
Columbia got on the board first in the opening inning as Wolff led off the game with a single before stealing second and coming around to score on senior 1B Aliyah Crawley's RBI triple. After KCU took the lead 2-1, CC came back with a run in the third on 3B Elaina Seymour's RBI single that scored Lebiedz to tie the game at 2 apiece.
Junior pitcher Ally Boyd (5-3) went on to pitch all 9 innings allowing only the two runs on 8 hits with a walk and 3 Ks to get her 5th win.
The Lady Koalas will next stay on the road in Eastern Kentucky to take on the University of Pikeville on Wednesday in a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
