Game 2
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College softball team dropped both ends of their home conference doubleheader with the University of Pikeville on Saturday falling 7-1 in game one and 8-2 in game two.
A scoreless game one saw Pikeville break through in the 5th inning scoring a run without a hit to take an early 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout. Senior starting pitcher Ally Boyd had a no-hitter going through 5 and 1/3 innings before back-to-back Bear singles in the 6th broke it up.
The game remained 1-0 through six innings until UPike broke it open in the 7th scoring six runs taking advantage of some Koala errors. Junior OF Takeirra Bakken drove in the lone run for CC in the 7th on a single scoring Lana Hampson who came on as a pinch-runner. Also recording hits for the Koalas were infielders Ashlynn Wolff, sophomore 3B Elaina Seymour and freshman 1B Ashlyn Blackstone.
Boyd fell to 2-4 on the season throwing 6 and 1/3 innings allowing six hits and 5 runs (3 earned) on a walk and four strikeouts.
Game two saw Pikeville score 5 runs in the 2nd inning off junior pitcher Maddie Vaughn before adding two runs in the 4th off freshman reliever Nealy Lockner. Columbia scored two runs off a two-RBI double from catcher Reagan Kelly in the 7th inning to get to within 8-2, but it was too late for the Koalas as they left multiple runners on base throughout the game.
CC totaled 10 hits in the game led by left fielder Brooke Farrell's three-for-three day (3 hits in 3 ABs) along with Wolff's two hits and a stolen base as the duo combined for 5 of the 10 hits. Lockner, Seymour, Blackstone, and junior DH Karmen Christie also recorded singles for the Koalas.
Vaughn managed to last just 1 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 hits and 4 runs (3 earned) on 2 walks while Lockner therew 4 and 2/3 innings of relief permitting 3 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks. Boyd tossed the final inning striking out one and allowing one run.
Columbia falls to 14-10 overall and 2-6 in the conference while UPike improved to 13-7 overall and 3-5 in the AAC. The Koalas will remain home to finish their homestand by hosting rival SMC on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
