Koala Softball Can't Get Offense Untracked vs. AAC Leader Reinhardt

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College softball team dropped both games of their home conference DH against AAC leader Reinhardt University (Ga.) on Thursday by scores of 8-0 in game one and 3-0 in game two.

In game one, RU scored five runs in the second inning against senior pitcher Ally Boyd on two RBI singles, two sacrifice flies and an error while the Eagles then added two more in the 4th off sophomore reliever Madison Cheek on consecutive run-scoring singles. RU then put the game out of reach in the 5th inning on another sacrifice fly.

Columbia broke up RU's combined perfect game and no-hit bid in the bottom of the 5th as junior infielder Ashlynn Wolff and senior outfielder Malaurie Martin reached via Reinhardt's infield errors. Junior 2B Joni Littlejohn then broke up the no-hit bid on a single to short, but CC could not find a run to continue the game.

Boyd (2-8) went just two innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits while walking two. Cheek threw the next two innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on six hits and two walks. Senior reliever Amanda Lohrey then tossed a scoreless inning of relief allowing no hits and no walks.

During game two, junior pitcher Maddie Vaughn (8-7) threw all 7 innings recording a solid start allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while walking six and striking out four to get the hard-luck loss. RU scored their first run on a fielder's choice ground out in the 3rd before an RBI single and RBI double put the Eagles up 3-0 after four innings. Vaughn would hold them scoreless over the final three innings as well.

Freshman 1B Ashlyn Blackstone led the offense with two hits while Wolff also recorded a hit. The Koalas had their best chance to score in the 4th inning when DP Karmen Christie reached via error before Blackstone moved her to third on one of her hits. However, a groundout by outfielder Takeirra Bakken ended the threat.

Columbia falls to 18-18 overall and 6-14 in the conference while RU improves to a conference-best 13-3 and 17-5 overall.

The Lady Koalas will be right back in action on Good Friday at 3:00 pm when they host Paine College on Senior Day.
