Softball Sweeps Paine, Runs Win Streak to 4
AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Columbia College softball team swept non-conference foe Paine College on the road on Sunday in Augusta to run their win streak to four games in a row while picking up their 21st and 22nd wins.
The Koalas used a 2-hit shutout from pitcher Madison Cheek to win game one 1-0 before rallying to outscore the Lions 8-6 in game two.
Cheek, a sophomore, threw all 7 innings in game one allowing just two hits and zero runs while walking four and striking out two. Catcher Reagan Kelly drove in the game-winning run in the 4th inning on a RBI single while she led the team with two hits. Sophomore 3B Elaina Seymour also knocked a hit and scored the lone run while senior DH Ally Boyd and senior LF Brooke Farrell recorded hits as well. Senior outfielder Lana Hampson also stole two bases.
In game two, Paine got off to a fast start leading 6-1 after two innings scoring six unearned runs off game two starting pitcher Maddie Vaughn. Columbia, though, wuould rally the next inning scoring five runs in the third to tie the game at six apiece. They then added the go-ahead run in the 5th and one more insurance run in the 7th to get the win.
Senior reliever Amanda Lohrey came on for Vaughn in the 2nd inning and proceeded to shut out the Lady Lions over the final 5 and 2/3 innings allowing 8 hits but no runs while walking two. Vaughn allowed four hits and six unearned runs while walking one and striking out one over 1 and 1/3 innings.
The Koalas stole six bases, recorded six hits and picked up six walks in the win while senior outfielder Malaurie Martin had two RBI and fellow outfielder Takeirra Bakken had two hits, a run, an RBI, a walk and a double. Junior 2B Karmen Christie drove in a run with a hit while scoring a run and inducing a walk along with fellow middle infielder Ashlynn Wolff who also knocked a single, stole two bases and scored a run. Seymour walked twice and scored two runs with a stolen base as well. Other stolen bases came from outfielders Krislyn Wilder and Hampson as they combined for three swiped bags.
The Koalas improve to an even .500 on the season at 22-22 while dropping Paine to 8-18.
Columbia will now have a week off before heading north to Virginia for their final conference series of the season to play Bluefield University on Saturday.
