Johnson Enters Elite Club - Logs 1000 Career Points
Saturday evening was a tough loss for the Koalas basketball team who has struggled to close games in the second half of the season. However, the evening did have an especially bright spot. Late in the third quarter, junior point guard and captain, BriAna Johnson hit two free throws and with the second became the first in Koalas history to log 1,000 career points. Remarkably, Johnson's accomplishment came with several games left in her junior year. Game play was stopped after the free throw as Johnson was recognized and given the game ball to keep. Johnson received a standing ovation from her home crowd at Porter Gymnasium.
Head coach Maria Chen said she was glad Johnson's on-court contributions were recognized. "BriAna does a lot for us on the court. Obviously, she is a very capable scorer and sometimes that ability goes unnoticed. I'm glad she was able to hit this mark in such short order because it speaks volumes about her talent and what she is capable of bringing to this team in any game she plays. It's also an honor to coach the first player to receive this recognition for our program," said Chen.
Johnson will continue to build on her exceptional career in the remaining games this season as the Koalas travel to Reinhardt this Wednesday. Chen added that she hopes Johnson's elite level of play will be duly noted when votes are cast for All-Conference awards in a couple weeks. Johnson leads the team in scoring at 17.0 PPG in conference play as well as assists.
