Clinton Rallies To Edge Koalas

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College women's basketball team dropped a 55-50 decision at home to NCCAA foe Clinton College (S.C.) on Monday evening in their last game before the break.

Columbia got off to a good start leading 14-7 after the first quarter and extended it to a 10-point lead at 24-14. However, a 10-4 second-quarter-run from Clinton then saw the Koalas lead by just four points at the break, 28-24.

In the third, the Koalas would go up by nine at 39-30 with under five minutes to play in the period. But Clinton would outscore the Koalas 9-4 to trail by four heading into the fourth. Unfortunately, Clinton would step up their defense in the fourth quarter holding Columbia to just 7 points in outscoring them 15-7 to grab the win.

The Koalas struggled shooting the ball all evening going just 25% from the floor and only 8% from three knocking down just two from deep. Clinton shot 38.5% overall and nearly 45% from three making the difference in the end. The Koalas also forced the Bears into 41 turnovers while recording 21 steals.

Sophomore guard Makiah Thompson led the Koalas with 14 points on 5 of 12 shooting with with four steals, three assists and two rebounds while junior guard Anaya Muhammad contributed 10 points with 3 rebounds and an assist off the bench.

Defensively, senior guard Tameah Gaddis played well tallying a season-high nine steals along with three points, two rebounds and two assists while fellow guard, junior Tysonia Lowe, recorded 7 points and six assists with three rebounds, a steal and a block. Junior guard Lauren Wearbon also played well on the defensive end adding four points, six rebounds, four steals, and a block while junior forward Shandrea Pringle added six points and five rebounds.

Columbia falls to 6-7 overall while Clinton improves to 4-6. The Koalas are next in action on Dec. 29 when they face Coastal Carolina in an exhibition game on the road in Myrtle before returning home on Saturday, January 3 to continue conference play against Bluefield at 1:30 pm.
