Koalas Rule Royals in AAC Clash
Kylie Stewart (1A), left, and Madison Stewart (1G, 2A) both played well in the 3-0 win
The Columbia College Koalas won on the road for the second time this week as they came away 3-0 winners in their first ever contest against the Johnson University Royals in AAC action on Saturday evening in Knoxville, TN.
After a midweek game that lasted over 108 minutes in double overtime, the win against the Royals came much more smoothly for the Koalas as they outshot Johnson 24-3 in the match.
Madison Stewart scored what would turn out to be the game winning goal in the 17th minute of the game, taking a touch past the onrushing keeper from a cross and keeping her nerve to slide home from six yards out to make it 1-0 in the contest. Sammie McDaniel and Brianna Sandoval had assists on the goal.
Despite a 10-1 shot advantage in the first half, the Koalas did not strike again until the 47th minute, when Stewart's through ball found Jordan Myers and she finished past the Royals keeper to make it 2-0.
The third and final goal of the contest in the 68th minute was a fantastic team goal for Columbia and was Myers' second goal of the game. Josie Vega and Theresa Chambers were both involved before Kylie Stewart found her sister with a long ball which Madison Stewart flicked on for Myers, who lobbed the Johnson keeper from just inside the box to add gloss to the scoreline at 3-0.
In midfield, Kaylee Barnes worked intensely to stifle a creative middle three for the Royals, while Kylie Stewart deputised very well at center back for the Koalas in her first start in that position of the season.
Columbia plays again in the AAC on Wednesday evening when they travel to face cross town rivals CIU at 7PM.
