Columbia Rolls Past Morris for First Win
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College volleyball rolled to their first win of the season on Thursday routing Morris College 3-0 from Porter Gymnasium. The victory was also head coach Drew Burdette's first collegiate win.
The Koalas dominated all three sets by scores of 25-8, 25-10 and 25-5 totaling 34 kills with just 8 errors while hitting .491. CC also registered 26 aces for a season-high. Columbia hit .600 in the first set with 8 kills before putting up an impressive 16 kills in the second set at .355. The final set saw the Koalas hit .755 with 10 kills.
They were led by senior middle blocker Destiny Brown and her stellar career game of 10 kills with zero errors and hit .769 and two service aces. Fellow middle Mikayla Stout also played terrific tallying 7 kills and hitting .750 while senior outside hitter Jada Gentry recorded 3 kills with 7 aces.
Outside hitter Brhia Cummings knocked down 4 kills as well with no errors while sophomore setter Debra Shephard led with 26 assists and two aces. Freshman libero Katie Roberts then had 4 aces and 2 digs while senior OH Gracie Hicklin added 4 kills.
Defensive specialists Leticia Assen and Amanda Velez also each tallied 5 service aces apiece while combining for 3 assists and 3 digs.
Columbia (1-4) will next have some time off before closing out their non-conference season with a road game at Div. II Southern Wesleyan (SC) next Wednesday evening.
