Koala Men Settle For Draw at Johnson

KNOXVILLE, TN - The Columbia College men's soccer team had to settle for a 3-3 draw in their conference matchup with Johnson University on the road in Knoxville on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson struck first in the six-goal match scoring in the 8th minute of action to take the early lead. The Koalas then came back with consecutive goals during a three-minute span late in the first half to take a 2-1 halftime edge. Scoring first for CC was freshman forward Jacob Madeiros off an assist from sophomore midfielder Abner Madrid in the 34th minute while fellow sophomore midfielder Andres Abril then added an unassisted goal at the 36-minute mark. Columbia took a 4-3 edge in shots into the break as well.

However, JU came out quick in the second half to tie the match at two goals apiece, scoring an unassisted goal in the 47th minute. But the Koalas would not be denied as forward Natneal Micheal gave CC the lead back at 3-2 scoring in the 58th minute.

Unfortunately, 30 minutes later, in the 88th minute, Johnson found the tying goal to break the hearts of the Koala faithful.

Columbia outshot the Royals 9-3 in the second half and 13-6 overall led by four shots on goal from sophomore midfielder Noah Poungthana while senior goalkeeper Nathan Huff made one save on four shots on goal.

Columbia goes to 6-5-3 overall and 4-3-3 in the conference to get to 15 points and sits in sixth place with just two games remaining while Johnson improved to 3-7-3 and 2-5-3 in the AAC with 9 points.

The Koalas will next head up the road to Spartanburg to take on AAC rival SMC on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
