Lady Koalas Use Hot Shooting to Roll Past Voorhees
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College women's basketball team won their 4th straight game on Monday evening using their offensive prowess to defeat visiting NAIA foe Voorhees University (S.C.) 84-72 from the Godbold Center.
Columbia used their highest-scoring first quarter of the season to build an 18-8 lead before going up 23-20 after one. The Koalas then turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter outscoring the Tigers 21-12 to take a 44-32 lead at the break.
The teams then combined for 46 points in the third quarter as VU scored 24 to the Koalas' 22, but CC still led 66-56 after three. Then, in the fourth, VU could only get to within eight points at 66-58 before Columbia went on a 12-2 run to go up by 18 with 4:30 to play and essentially put the game out of reach.
Columbia shot 44 percent overall and 46.5% from the three-point arc while making 23 of 30 free throws and forcing 29 Voorhees turnovers. CC also out-rebounded the Tigers 43-32 on the night while putting 15 different Koalas into the scoring column.
Junior guard Anaya Muhammad led the Koalas with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting and three 3-pointers along with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Also finishing in double figures was senior forward De'Asia Feaster with 13 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Freshman guard Krislyn Wilder then added 11 efficient points off the bench in just 10 minutes of action.
Sophomore point guard Makiah Thompson also chipped in 8 points with a team-high six assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals while junior guard Lauren Wearbon added 6 points, a team-best four steals and two assists. Freshman forward Natalie Pitts also tallied 6 points and 7 rebounds with a steal.
The Koalas improve to 4-2 overall while Voorhees falls to 3-3. Columbia is next on the road this Saturday when they head to Knoxville, TN to take on Johnson University in AAC play at 2:00 pm.
