Women's Tennis Falls 4-0 to SCAD in AAC Quarters
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The No. 7 seed Columbia College Lady Koalas, fell 4-0 to second seeded SCAD Atlanta (Ga.) in the quarterfinals of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament Monday morning at the Champions Club in Chattanooga.
During singles play, SCAD clinched wins at the No. 1, 4, and 5 lines to grab the win while sophomore Ana Ribeiro and junior Aniya Sims each trailed 0-6, 1-3 to all-conference players when the matches were called. Senior Natalia Diaz fell 0-6, 0-6 at the top line to the player of the year in the conference while Vienne Geren lost 0-6, 1-6 at No. 4 to another 1st team all-conference player. Sophomore Rachel Thompson also lost at No. 5 to an all-conference player.
SCAD Atlanta (9-3), who are ranked 11th in the national poll, won all three doubles flights to grab the early 1-0 lead winning 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1 at the third line as V. Geren and sophomore Camryn McCutchen teamed up. Sims and Ribeiro lost at the No. 1 line while Diaz and Thompson dropped their match at No. 2.
The Lady Koalas, however, did have five women make the All-Academic Team as Diaz, V. Geren, Camryn McCutchen, Madison Wells-Bunting and Joye Tate earned the honors while Nat Diaz was also named to the Champions of Character team.
The women (7-7) will play their final match of the season in a non-conference exhibition at nearby Benedict College on Wednesday afternoon.
