Lady Koalas Knock Off Point for First Win
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College women's basketball team held off Point University 64-56 to pick up their first win of the season and first under new head coach Toccara Toland on Saturday from the Godbold Center.
The game got off to a slow start as the teams struggled to shoot the ball in the first quarter combining for just 15 points as Point took a 10-5 lead. However, Columbia found their game in the second quarter forcing PU into turnovers and capitalizing off of them as they outscored the Skyhawks 25-8 to take a 30-18 lead at the intermission.
A high-scoring third quarter then ensued with the teams combining for 43 points with CC taking it 22-21 to lead 52-39 going into the fourth. Point (0-5) would make a run trimming the Koalas lead from 13 down to four, but CC would make their free throws down the stretch for the win. Columbia shot 32 percent from the floor overall and 21% from three while holding Point to just 21 baskets all game and 30 percent shooting.
Columbia was led by a stellar game from junior guard Anaya Muhammad as she put up a season-high 24 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the three-point line along with 2 assists and a steal. Also finishing in double-digits and recording a double double was senior forward De'Asia Feaster with 10 points and 12 rebounds along with 2 steals.
Guards Lauren Wearbon, Jala Hutchins, and Makiah Thompson combined for 9 points, 7 assists and 3 steals on the afternoon while forwards Ronni Harper and Taylor Boddie teamed up to record 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Tysonia Lowe led the team with 7 assists along with 4 rebounds, 5 points and a steal in the win.
Columbia improves to 1-2 on the year and will next go on the road to begin conference play when they take on Spartanburg Methodist on Wednesday at 5:30 pm.
